Someone who does it for the ‘gram.

We all know those people. Heck, we’ve all dated those people. You know, the one’s that obsessively document their relationships, filtering out anything remotely negative or (dare I say it) real for fear that they might appear just a unicorn’s whisker short of perfect. Sure, dating this person initially will be pretty fun, but inevitably the cracks will show. You’ll start to notice that every big occasion is overshadowed and even marred by the perceived lack of likes or comments it’s corresponding social media posts are getting. Or that every mundane event suddenly becomes a big production in an effort to crowdsource approval and admiration. These kinds of people are exhausting to date simply because they require the amount of attention no singular mere mortal can provide. And also, it can be really hard to discern the gestures that are actually genuine from the ones that are merely for the ‘gram.

Someone who only tells you what you want to hear.

You surround yourself with friends who always tell you the truth no matter what, so why wouldn’t you date someone who does the same? Sure it can be nice if your partner agrees to everything you say and everything you want to do, but it can also be incredibly frustrating. Eventually it’s just going to feel like you’re the reluctant ventriloquist and everything you think and say will come out of your partner’s mouth. If you wanted someone just to repeat after you, you would have just bought a pet parrot. A strong relationship, believe it or not, requires a healthy dose of debate. There needs to be some tension so you can create a strong, unbreakable bond. So do yourself a favour and find a partner who’s not afraid to call you out on your bullshit and who isn’t afraid of a little back and forth.

 Someone who makes fun of your passions and hobbies.

These people are the worst! Not only will they make fun of you for actually having dreams and ambition, they’ll put down and belittle any and all of your efforts. You wouldn’t want to be friends with these people let alone commit to a relationship with them. The truth of the matter is people like this can’t stand seeing other people succeed. Because when they do, they see their own lack of success and can’t handle it. These kinds of people will be the stone to your helium balloon; as much as you want to soar above the clouds and chase your dreams, they’re just going to tether you to them to ensure you stay at their level.
